MIND THE GAAP

Anthropic releases S-1. Ferox announces trillion-dollar scale function for Encore.

Anthropic's S-1 has some very big numbers in it. That got me thinking about how reports show them, and Encore 1.1.36 now scales anything from thousands to trillions.

I know this sounds like total clickbait but this is what really happened.

As I was contemplating the Anthropic S-1 filing, hearing about it on tech podcasts, and reading about it everywhere, it struck me: there are some big ass numbers here. What will their financial reports look like?

Over my career I've seen that companies report their financials using different scales. For example, it is common to see at the top of the report "(dollar amounts in thousands)" or "(numbers in thousands except for per share amounts)".

In the early '80s, I worked with a company that reported in thousands at the divisional level, but when they consolidated everything was reported in millions. With the likes of Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta, etc., I can see that billions would be an appropriate scale to use when you're looking at financial reports.

Here's an example from Apple's 10-K:

Products and Services Performance

The following table shows net sales by category for 2025, 2024 and 2023 (dollars in millions):

2025 Change 2024 Change 2023
iPhone $209,586 4% $201,183 — $200,583
Mac 33,708 12% 29,984 2% 29,357
iPad 28,023 5% 26,694 (6)% 28,300
Wearables, Home and Accessories 35,686 (4)% 37,005 (7)% 39,845
Services (1) 109,158 14% 96,169 13% 85,200
Total net sales $416,161 6% $391,035 2% $383,285

(1) Services net sales include amortization of the deferred value of services bundled in the sales price of certain products.

And what about the Japanese, reporting in yen? Companies can hit the trillions real quick.

Note that there are currency and non-currency numbers (the percentages) appearing on the same report next to each other. The report generator needs to know which is which.

The new Encore SCALE report spec

Syntax

SCALE unit [ALL] [FOR colspec]
SCALE NONE

Description

Divides printed values by a unit so dollars print in thousands, millions, billions or trillions. Units: THOUSANDS (or K), MILLIONS (M), BILLIONS (B), TRILLIONS (T), any positive divisor such as 100, or NONE (also OFF, 1) to go back to raw values.

Display only: the matrix, CALC, TOPROWS ordering and WITHTOTAL / WITHOTHER sums keep using the raw numbers, and charts are not scaled.

Percentages are left alone. A value printed with AFTER "%" in effect for its column, or on a row whose name contains % or ends in Pct / Percent, prints unscaled; add ALL to scale those too.

FOR colspec limits the scaling to the listed printed column positions (counted the way DECIMALS … FOR counts them), so a full-year column can be in millions while the months stay in thousands. A later SCALE without FOR replaces the whole setting.

When ZERO is set, a scaled value that rounds to zero at the column's decimals prints the ZERO text instead of 0.

SETSCALE is accepted as an alias. The report variables <@ScaleLabel> (in thousands, in millions, …, empty when no scale) and <@ScaleFactor> (1000, …) are set for use in headings.

Example

SCALE THOUSANDS
CENTER "Income Statement (<@ScaleLabel>)"
DECIMALS 0
"Revenue" // 1,234,567 prints 1,235
"Cost of Goods Sold"
DECIMALS 1
AFTER "%"
"Gross Margin %" // 42.3% — not scaled
AFTER ""
DECIMALS 0
SCALE MILLIONS FOR c5 // full-year column in millions, months stay in thousands
"Net Income"
SCALE NONE
